What is New Horizons?

New Horizons programs provide entry points to music making for adults, including those with no musical experience at all and those who were active in school music programs but have been inactive for a long time.  Join us!

Founded by Roy Ernst in 1991, New Horizons was designed in particular for senior adults, but there is no minimum or maximum age or ability requirement. Everyone is welcome, including beginners. All agree that New Horizons is a community of music-makers flourishing in a non-competitive, collaborative, and supportive environment.

The Rochester (NY) program includes beginning, intermediate and advanced bands, a Big Band, Jazz Ensemble, beginning strings, full and string orchestras, a chorus, and several chamber ensembles.

Even though Roy started New Horizons here in Rochester, NY, many other New Horizons bands have started up throughout the world.  They are all gathered together in the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA).  For more information about NHIMA, go to www.newhorizonsmusic.org

The Eastman-Rochester program is, of course, a member of the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA).  Individuals may also join NHIMA and thus receive many benefits including reduced rates at music camps, a newsletter and many on-line classes.

For information on how to join New Horizons, contact the Eastman Community Music School office.
