Eastman - Rochester New Horizons Music
The Birthplace of New Horizons. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Roy Ernst, Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY
I played the flute in seventh and eighth grade at Draper High School in Schenectady,NY where I grew up. I took lessons from a young teacher at school who was very encouraging but I knew that I was not very good. I think that the rest of the kids were taking private lessons. I had to drop flute anyway because of a schedule change. I really remember the band as one of the few things that I enjoyed about high school.
After graduating from Hampton University in Virginia I worked for the Rochester City School District for 33 years. I taught mostly first grade. I retired in 2009 and was excited to start things that I never had time for while working and raising a family. I learned about New Horizon from the internet. I joined the Green Band and later moved on to Concert Band. I was so nervous for my first lesson. Seventh grade was so long ago but it was like riding a bike. Since then I have loved every minute of it!
While I love babysitting my grandson, exercising, traveling, tutoring and also helping out with religious education at Sacred Heart Cathedral, being a member of a Barnes and Noble book club and maybe starting art lessons at the gallery this fall, my favorite activity is New Horizons. It's fantastic!
