Eastman - Rochester New Horizons Music
The Birthplace of New Horizons. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Roy Ernst, Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY
New Horizons was a new beginning for me at 67 years of age. My wife was very persuasive about me playing again the trumpet.
I started playing in the 6th grade after hearing an upper classman play "Beautiful Dreamer" on a trumpet. It put goose bumps up my spine. I knew that instant, that if I could produce that sound playing that instument, that would be a dream and one of my goals.
I played the trumpet in the 6th grade through high school. Playing in the ROTC band in college and in a 5 piece combo while stationed overseas in the U.S. Air Force ended sort of a musical climax for me. Shortly after I was discharged, I married my high school sweetheart. My trumpet was in mothballs for 45 years while pursuing a career and helping raise a family.
After retirement from Kodak in 2005, a newpaper article initiated a telephone call to Ed Mizma, Rochester New Horizons director. He invited me to play and made me feel so welcome. Every day since has been a new day for a love that I had abandoned. The rest has been a loving history.
